CCC doesn’t rely on the volume name alone for identification, it uses the volume’s universally unique identifier. CCC isn’t making any assumptions here either–indeed, the old Mac’s “Macintosh HD” volume is not available on the new Mac, the new Mac has its own “Macintosh HD” volume. There are no CCC nor macOS bugs here, it’s normal and correct for CCC to indicate that the source volume is not available when you migrate your data to a new Mac. Unfortunately, the names are irrelevant, as Carbon Copy Cloner developer Mike Bombich was kind enough to explain on TidBITS Talk. You might think that SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner could pick up where they left off on the old Mac if you’ve kept the name of the startup drive for the new Mac the same as it was on the old one. Check your Time Machine exclusions in System Preferences > Time Machine > Options. I’ve heard some people worry that you might need to remove and re-add excluded drives, but I’ve seen no issues with that. It’s worth noting that exclusions you set on the old Mac should also come over. In that case, the only downside to restarting your Time Machine backup (remove the drive from Time Machine, erase it in Disk Utility, and select it in Time Machine again) is losing access to older versions of changed files. There’s no problem in doing this, although it’s possible that Time Machine will back up a lot more files from the new Mac and thus fill up its drive. If you want to use your old Time Machine backup with your new Mac-and there’s no inherent reason why you shouldn’t-be aware that macOS will prompt you to inherit the backup history. I’m sure this is nowhere near a comprehensive list, so be sure to let us know in the comments about other things you’ve run into when moving to a new Mac. So if you’re planning to buy a new Mac, here are some of the tasks that may be left for you after migration. All of these relate to how the underlying identity of the Mac has changed, even if its name and the names of all the drives in play remain the same. It’s a nice idea, but in reality, there are numerous areas where Setup Assistant simply doesn’t-and probably can’t-save you from additional work. The promise implicit in Setup Assistant’s migration is that you won’t have to reconfigure everything and can just get back to work. What I do notice is that all the flakiness I was experiencing has disappeared-it’s nice to be able to restart without it being a production (see “ Six Lessons Learned from Dealing with an iMac’s Dead SSD,” 27 April 2020).ĭuring the setup of the new iMac, I had no issues migrating all my data from the Samsung T5 SSD that I had been using to boot the old iMac, but I was somewhat surprised at how much additional work was necessary afterward. The new machine is great, although I have to admit that I don’t notice much of a performance improvement over the old one, despite it having a much beefier CPU. Several weeks ago, I upgraded from a 2014 27-inch iMac with Retina display to Apple’s new 2020 version of the same model (see “ 27-inch iMac Receives Significant Update, Other iMacs Get a Nod,” 4 August 2020). These problems, when they have been traced, often appear to be caused by interference from other software installed on the same PC. Among the most common symptoms they report are fork failures, memory leaks, and file access denied problems. What applications have been found to interfere with Cygwin? >įrom time to time, people have reported strange failures and problems in Cygwin and Cygwin packages that seem to have no rational explanation. Look out for BLODA (Big List Of Dodgy Apps.) and uninstallīLODA - A list of applications that interfere with the normal working of Cygwin by intrusively injecting themselves in the system call chain Like I said, this is just a work around and may be the best/only solution. I repeated this setup about 5 times before successfully installing cygwin. For example, after canceling the snagged install at 94% (mentioned above), I ran the setup file again and got to 95% before the install snagged again. So after fiddling with the install a little more, I discovered that if you close the frozen install, and re-execute the setup file, it forces the install past the point where it got snagged the previous time. So what I'm looking for is how do I help the installer continue from this point? What do I need to do to go in cygwin and give it the extra motivation it needs to finish the job. In this instance, it was and the install was at 94%! So close!!! This is almost always a different package at a different point in the install. and everything goes great until a certain package get's tripped up and causes the install to hang. I don't change any of the "Resolving Dependencies" (whatever those are).I don't specify any additional items for the install (I thought it would best to keep it as simple as possible after running into this problem multiple times.).Use "C:\Users\Austin\Downloads" as the default local package directory.Use "C:\cygwin" as the default root directory for all users. Here's a play-by-play of what I'm doing and where it hangs on me. When this happens, the install literally freezes and doesn't budge a "bit." I've read that this is a somewhat common problem but like I said, I've never come across it before. However, I've never experienced the install hanging during the install process. If you used Disk Utility from macOS Recovery, you can now restart your Mac: choose Apple menu > Restart. So I have used Cygwin on and off for the past few years and I've installed it a handful of times. The order of repair in this example was Macintosh HD - Data, then Macintosh HD, then Container disk4, then APPLE SSD. For each disk that you're repairing, start by selecting the last volume on that disk, then click the First Aid button or tab. In digital communications, a parity bit is a bit added to a binary stream to ensure that the total number of 1-valued bits is even or odd. To implement the serial input variant an SLG46620V is used. To implement the parallel input binary parity generator and checker an SLG46536V is used. To do this, a serial-to-parallel conversion is implemented within the GreenPAK. The second variant implements a serial input, loading the data with an asynchronous serial data transmission. The first variant has a parallel input so that the data bits to be verified are loaded simultaneously. To do this, the app note implements two variants of parity checking. In this application note, the digital logic required to implement an integrated parity generator/checker managed by control signals is implemented. For example, the same general GreenPAK design can be used whether the intended I/O is active-high, active-low, or a mix. Supplementing a Dialog GreenPAK design can positively affect the affordability, size, and modularity of the design. There are several different brands of commercial IC’s (CD40101, 74HC/HCT280) that implement the parity generator/checker. If this number doesn’t match with the parity bit transmitted it means there is an error in the received data. In the receiver node, the number of high bits in the message is counted. The message containing the data bits, along with parity bit, is transmitted from transmitter node to receiver node. This bit is used to detect errors during the transmission of binary data. The parity generating/checking method is one of the most widely used error detection techniques for data transmission a parity bit is appended to the transmitted data to make the binary data’s sum of 1s either even or odd. Within these transmissions, data errors are one of the most important problems that must be analyzed to obtain a reliable communication system. It describes the implemented logic, GreenPAKs implementation, and the obtained results.īinary serial transmissions are among the most widely used techniques for sharing information between devices by using wired or unwired transmissions. This app note implements a binary parity generator and checker with two data input variants, a parallel data input, and a serial data input. Hence the idea was born to create a new projection that would have more ‘eye appeal’ compared to existing equal-area projections and to give it the catchy name Equal Earth,” the authors explained.Ī map projection is the two dimensional translation of the shape of the earth. “We searched for alternative equal-area map projections for world maps, but could not find any that met all our aesthetic criteria. Our message – that Gall-Peters is not the only equal-area projection – was not getting through,” the authors wrote in a recently published paper in the International Journal of Geographical Information Science. “The reaction among cartographers to this announcement, and others like it in the years past, was predictable: frustration. The three cartographers created the Equal Earth map in response to public schools in Boston adopting another map, the Gall-Peter map projection, to depict the true sizes of the continents in 2017. The height-to-width aspect ratio of 1:2.05458 is very close to the natural ratio of a sphere and pole lines are 0.59247 times the length of the equator. Instead, they mimic the appearance of the elliptical arcs of the globe, making the new map visually appealing. The longitudes of the new map are equally spaced and do not excessively curve outwards. However, it heavily distorts the size of the continents, making Africa look tiny and Greenland and Russia stretched out. The standard map projection, called the Mercator projection, was developed in 1569 and is still widely used. The new map, called the Equal Earth Map Projection, was developed by Bojan Savric from the Environmental Systems Research Institute in California Tom Patterson, executive director of North American Cartographic Information Society based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Bernhard Jenny from Monash University in Melbourne. An equal area map projection retains the size of the continents as on earth, but distorts the shape or the angle of the landmass A collaboration of three cartographers has developed a new representation of the world map, which is aesthetically pleasing and depicts the true sizes of all continents without distorting their shapes too much. That comment comes after reports that Microsoft has lately started to win more CRM deals away from Salesforce. We are selling billions of dollars of CRM that's with a B and that is the difference between us and the competition. Arrives by Thu, Mar 23 Buy SHELLTON STEM Projects for Kids Ages 10-12 Kids Building Projects Solar Robot Kit 3-in-1 Solar Power DIY Dinosaurs Robot Science. Look, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP they're selling millions of dollars of CRM, that's with an M. So Benioff couldn't resist this barb at Microsoft, too: They compete in Salesforce's bread-and-butter market of software for salespeople known as "customer relationship management." Benioff has also been a long-time friend of Microsoft chairman John Thompson.īut until recently, the two companies had been bitter rivals. Microsoft and Salesforce are now partners making some of their products work better together and Benioff has become friendly with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, (who will speak at Salesforce's upcoming Dreamforce conference). He even tossed out a cautious put-down of his new-found friend Microsoft. But in this area of the cloud, Oracle has not delivered. And I do view Larry as one of the most capable leaders in our industry. I think we've mostly seen Oracle actually fail in the cloud market, I mean, for a long time, Larry said that the cloud was ridiculous and then he started taking it more seriously, but I just haven't seen any competitive cloud solutions from Oracle. He also threw a dart at his former boss, friend and mentor, Oracle executive chairman Larry Ellison (who was actually an early investor in Salesforce): These are old technology bases that are kind of meandering along like mainframes. But they can hang in there with their revenue, and it's meander along like big dinosaurs moving down the desert for a while. And that's what you see with companies like Oracle and SAP. It just means they're selling old technology and upgrading it. That doesn't mean that IBM is innovating . I think we all know IBM still sells a lot of mainframes. So naturally, his answers were wonderfully colorful. For starters, he compared IBM, Oracle and SAP to "big dinosaurs." That happens to be one of Benioff's favorite topics. During the quarterly conference call with Wall Street analysts, CEO Marc Benioff was asked why he thinks Salesforce is growing its revenues and profit margins while bigger software companies are floundering. Salesforce reported another good quarter on Thursday. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. He now has more than a decade of racing office experience. He is now settled down with a family of his own but his enthusiasm and decency has never changed. When Kim Sanzone and Peter O’Dowd first recommended Rob for the column, he was a shy single guy with a huge enthusiasm for greyhound racing and greyhound people. While disappointed for the Star, I am personally delighted that such a decent enthusiastic young guy has taken such an important step in his life. Understandably, Rob’s appointment means that he will be giving up his ‘Round Up’ column. I have the trainers support and look forward to working with them from a Racing Managers perspective.” “I have a brilliant and experienced team behind me that will help make the transition from Assistant Manager to Racing Manager a smoother journey. It’s a track steeped in history and I’m very much looking forward to being part of its next chapter. Rob himself responded: “I’m really pleased to have been given this chance to become Racing Manager at Hove. “It always gives me the greatest of pleasures when you are able to recruit from within and reward hardworking, talented individuals like Rob. He has the support from the Hove Racing Office, our Hove Stadia team, all of us here at Entain and I’m sure the wider industry, to achieve success in his new role. In announcing Rob’s promotion, Entain’s Leo Walker said: “Rob has a wealth of experience after working in the racing offices at Romford and Hove for many years and pure passion for the sport that comes across in abundance. The project was his idea, and rather than simply concentrate on big name stars, Rob set out to unearth untapped potential with many of his guests, trainers who would seldom make the headlines. Throughout most of that time – with a short gap – Rob has made magnificent contribution to the Star through his weekly Rob’s Romford Round-Up column. Rob spent a spell in the Corals Head Office in Barking before returning to racing office duties at Hove, originally under Peter Miller and more recently under Daniel Rankin. The nephew of a leading owner at Romford, Rob joined the Racing Office under the supervision of the highly rated Peter O’Dowd, and working alongside ARC’s recently appointed Senior Racing Manager Paul Illingworth. It is with great delight that we report the promotion of ‘Romford Rob’ Abrey to the position as Racing Manager at Hove. 1.1 When I delete a file from one of the sync folders, it is not deleted from the other sync folders, instead it is restored in the folder I deleted it from.1.2 Is Synkron able to recognise collisions (conflicts) between files?.1.3 How does Synkron compare files to determine which is the newest one?.2.3 How can I turn off backing up these files?.2.4 Where does Synkron store the backed up older versions of files it has ovewritten during synchronisations?.2.5 How can I change the folder where Synkron keeps the temporary files?.3.1 How to use Synkron as a portable application?.Does Synkron support deleting the file in the other sync folders, rather than restoring it? When I delete a file from one of the sync folders, it is not deleted from the other sync folders, instead it is restored in the folder I deleted it from. The feature is called "Propagate deletions" and it is accessible from the Advanced options of every sync tab. Is Synkron able to recognise collisions (conflicts) between files? You just need to activate the option "Detect collisions" which you can find in the Advanced options of every Sync and Multisync tab. How does Synkron compare files to determine which is the newest one? For more information see the documentation. Synkron compares files just by their last modified dates. I don't want Synkron to copy any new files to the first folder, because the second one is a backup of the first and I want to keep there any files I want without getting them back to the first folder. If this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can target 1 'Resonator' monster in your Graveyard, except 'Synkron Resonator' add it to your hand. You can only Special Summon 'Synkron Resonator' once per turn this way. In the Advanced options of Synchronise and Multisync tabs there options called "Update existing files only", in the Synchronise section there are 3 and in the Multisync section there are 2 of them. If a Synchro Monster is on the field, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand ). The topmost one in the Synchronise section refers to all your sync folders. The second one in Synchronise and the first in Multisync refers to the first sync folder in Synchronise and the sources in Multisync. The last one refers to the second folder in Synchronise and the destination in the Multisync section. These "Update existing files only" options forbid Synkron to copy any new files to the folder they are refering to. So if you don't want any new files to be copied into the first folder, you need to check the checkbox refering to that folder. Synkron backs up files it has overwritten or deleted during synchronisations to allow you to restore them in case it has done something you didn't want it to do. Verdict:įast, effective and powerful - Synkron simplifies the potentially tricky task of keeping files in sync.Go to the "Restore" section (click on the "Restore" button in the toolbar), check the files you want to restore in the list and click on the "Restore" button in the bottom right part of the window. The speed of operation and the fact that Synkron is available for Windows, Mac and Linux mean that there has never been an easier way to keep your folders up to date no matter which operating system you are using. Once it is complete, the Sync Log displays a list of the various actions that will be performed and you can choose to continue or change settings first - this can be automated by creating a schedule and configuring options in advance. Advanced conflict handling is available so you can choose what to do should two copies of the same file in a synchronisation pair have been edited since.Īnalysis of files is performed before any synchronisation takes place, and this is a fast process. The simple ability to synchronise files is useful in itself, but Synkron makes it easy to configure advanced rules to determine precisely what is included in the synchronisation task - you could opt to ignore files that are stored in a particular sub-folder, or choose to synchronise only files of a certain type for example. The program is a cross-platform tool which can be used to synchronise the contents of pairs of folders either manually or on a schedule. The tools needed to perform synchronisation tasks are often difficult to use or lacking key features - the same cannot be said of Synkron. Keeping folders synchronised is a simple way to backup data to protect against hard drive failure, accidental file deletion or other disaster.
